Our amazing manager, Gemma Oaten has shared a childhood snap of herself on day release from a children’s psychiatric unit as she continues to raise awareness for eating disorder. In the Mirror and OK Magazine.
This photo was taken before I went to watch my brother Chris play for Hull Kingston Rovers in the challenge plate Cup final at Wembley.
The children’s psychiatric unit is was in, where I’d nearly lost my life, allowed me to go after months of refeeding and on bed rest. I hadn’t been allowed a weekend out before and I was petrified.
Then Chris scored a try. At Wembley! All my fears disappeared for a moment. I smiled. I felt human.
I’ve never been prouder of him or forgotten that day. Next day I had to go back in the unit and I was heartbroken. I was 12 years old.
